Mission
The core facility was founded in 2005 to provide a professional background of animal experiments and promote best practices of humane care, use and management of animals involved in medical research at the Debrecen University.
We advance the development and acceptance of high standards for the responsible use of laboratory animals and accurate and reproducible animal experiments.
The Laboratory Animal Core Facility is administratively responsible for all animal care resources and the purchase and care of all laboratory animals in the Life Science Centre.
Housing conditions and laboratory capabilities
The facility is located on the Debrecen University campus as a part of the Life Science Centre. Suitable housing conditions are provided for a wide variety of outbred, inbred and genetically modified laboratory animals as mice, rats, guinea pigs and invertebrate organisms.
The Laboratory Animal Core Facility operates a clinical pathology laboratory for the purpose of basic disease surveillance and diagnosis as well as serving as a research resource to investigators. The laboratory capabilities include histology, immunocytochemsitry, clinical chemistry, chromatography, bacteriology.
Welfare and quality control
Specialized animal housing spaces include a quarantine suite, infectious biohazard containment suites. All animal rooms and the operation rooms are ventilated with HEPA filtered air. Our technologies see the requirements of FELASA recommendations and DIN EN ISO 9001 standards.
HEALTH MONITORING PROGRAMME
Animals are housed separately by species and, when possible, by source and or microbiological status. All rodent colonies are housed and maintained under minimal specific pathogen free (SPF) conditions. In our SPF definition we are negative for the following animal pathogens:

AIR STERILITY
The animal rooms are ventilated with sterile filtered positive pressured (+10%) air. The exchange rate is 13.000 m3 air/hour (with tenfold ventilation). The sterility of air flow is tested monthly by sedimentation test and cultivation of sedimented bacteria.
